When is the last day you can send in federal income tax forms?
Although there is no official time for when you can actually start to file your tax return to the IRS, there is a strict deadline for when they need to be filed, and that day is April 15th, or in other words, Tax Day. On this date, a taxpayer must at least file their tax return by 11:59pm on the 15th of April every year, or else there will be fines issued to the taxpayer by the IRS. This date also marks the the final day for someone to file an extension on their return, allowing them extra time to pay their taxes in full at a later date.
Obviously, the sooner you file them, the better off you'll be, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. The IRS knows this and urges people to start the process a few months in advance to allow taxpayers ample time to finish their returns, or at least be able to successfully file for extensions if there are certain circumstances that provide obstacles for taxes to be paid by the deadline. Failure to do any sort of filing by the deadline will result in a penalty fee issued by the IRS that will increase for every month the tax return is late.
